Enjoy these 5 reasons to visit Mompox. Mompox, also known as Mompós, is located in the department of Bolívar, Colombia. It's a small colonial town, steeped in tradition, with fascinating architecture, and where you'll enjoy the best of Caribbean cuisine.

Without a doubt, it's a destination that will surprise you. It was, after all, one of the sources of inspiration for the literary work "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez.

Would you like to visit? Here are 5 reasons to visit Mompox, Bolivar and experience its magic :

1. Mompox is a hidden treasure on the Colombian Caribbean Coast

Unlike tourist and colonial cities like Cartagena and Santa Marta, mass tourism is not common in Mompox.

So you'll enjoy a beautiful town with well-preserved colonial architecture; where you won't spend much money and above all you'll have total peace and quiet.

What we hear or see online about Mompox, Bolivar, truly doesn't do justice to the experience of being there in person. That's why it's  a hidden gem on the Colombian Caribbean coast .

 2.  Mompox, Bolivar offers a different kind of tourism

That's right! You don't need a specialized history guide or an expensive tour to discover the attractions of Mompox. Just by talking to the local you buy juice from or the man who takes you to your accommodation, you'll learn stories and traditions. Everyone has a story to tell!

Have you ever ridden in a moto-carro?  Moto-carros are the most common form of transportation. They're perfect for calmly and thoroughly appreciating the colorful streets or grand houses with names like "Doña Manuela." Most of them are guesthouses; the manager will surely tell you why it's called that or who historically owned the house.

Their crafts are unique; Mompox is famous for its silver and filigree accessories. They embody the essence of pre-Columbian culture, and their prices are reasonable considering the quality and detail. You have to take one home; you don't see this every day.

Some of its must-see places are: The House of Culture, visiting the churches, learning about the history of the colonial houses, walking along the river and passing through Calle del Medio.

Additionally, religious tourism is popular . Spending Holy Week in Mompox is an experience where you appreciate tradition; I challenge you to count how many churches there are in total throughout the town.

3. You don't need a lot of money to visit Mompox, Bolivar

You can find accommodations starting from 30,000 COP. I recommend staying near the Church of the Immaculate Conception. You'll be close to the must-see sights.

There's no need to spend money on taxis; since it's a small town, you can reach your desired places on foot or by taking a motorcycle taxi for 2,000 COP. Furthermore,  two or three days are enough to explore it .

The food is delicious and inexpensive; I really liked the restaurants along the river. Breakfast will cost you around $5,000 and lunch around $15,000 or less; it all depends on your preferences.

4.  You'll love the food in Mompox, Bolivar

Get ready to experience the full flavor of Caribbean cuisine. You'll find corozo (a tropical fruit) in all its forms: in juice, in traditional sweets, in cocktails, even in ice cream. You can't leave without trying it!

I invite you to accompany your breakfast with costeño cheese and an egg arepa. Try boca chico (it's a type of fish), yuca with chicharrón, or a barbecue with fried plantains.

There's a wide variety of food available , including themed restaurants that don't exclusively serve this type of cuisine. The best part is that there are options for every budget.

As for must-see spots, I recommend the "Crónicas" restaurant; it's one of the oldest and boasts a beautiful panoramic view of the river and the plaza. Also, grabbing a beer in the "Los Bosques" area is a great way to cool off in the afternoons and see how the locals enjoy their land.

Previously, one of the disadvantages that prevented reaching Mompox, Bolivar was that the road was not in the best condition.

Today that's no longer a problem, and there are transportation services with routes from cities like Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Santa Marta. The journeys take between 6 and 7 hours.
